And which one do you use most often?

When you understand how you handle conflict, you can begin to understand when your approach is effective and when it is not. Then you can learn to adapt your behavior and draw from different conflict resolutions styles as-needed. There are five conflict handling modes and one of these is your preferred mode. These five modes come from the TKI or Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument.

What is the TKI? The TKI is a questionnaire designed to measure how you tend to handle inter-personal conflict. This is expressed using five modes (which we will cover next) and two dimensions:

Use Compassion to Overcome Conflict

compassionA little compassion can go a long way.  Imagine for a moment that one of your co-workers comes into the office late and in a bad mood. You have been waiting for them because you need their input to finish writing a proposal for a customer. You walk into their office and they snap at you, “What do YOU want?”  
What do you do?

1)    Snap back at them, “I want the proposal information that you owed me thirty minutes ago and I want it right now!” You do this because they are late, they do owe you the information and their bad mood is not YOUR problem. If they can dish it out, so can you. You need them to know that you are not their door mat.

2)    Wait a moment, remember that they have been having a tough time lately and then let them know that you are here to collect their information for the customer proposal that is due this morning. You don’t yell or respond in a hostile manner. You speak to them in calm even tones. You come from a place of trying to put yourself in their shoes, remembering that they don’t want to be unhappy and neither do you.

About soft skills and project management

A key success factor for excellent project management often relies also upon the people skills of the project manager.

In order to minimize risk and ensure a successful project, project managers must not only deal with the technical project management aspects, but asses leadership skills, cultivate a motivated team, master negotiation tactics to effectively handle conflict situations and communicate effectively. Projects success can be jeopardized by things such as personal agendas, politics, poor communication and team conflicts.

And if you succeed, no matter how "good" you are,  you will never get the credit, if can’t communicate well with colleagues or clients.
