How Am I Supposed to Do That?

uncertain“Margaret, you share with us these great tips for treating people with compassion. You make sense when you remind us that other people’s behavior is about them. But how are we supposed to really do this in the real world? Especially when someone is right in my face and I just want to yell at them?”

Not only is that a fair and honest question, it is one I hear frequently.  If treating others with compassion was easy to do all of the time, almost everyone would do it all of the time.  So with that in mind, here are some tips to consider:

Use Compassion to Overcome Conflict

compassionA little compassion can go a long way.  Imagine for a moment that one of your co-workers comes into the office late and in a bad mood. You have been waiting for them because you need their input to finish writing a proposal for a customer. You walk into their office and they snap at you, “What do YOU want?”  
What do you do?

1)    Snap back at them, “I want the proposal information that you owed me thirty minutes ago and I want it right now!” You do this because they are late, they do owe you the information and their bad mood is not YOUR problem. If they can dish it out, so can you. You need them to know that you are not their door mat.

2)    Wait a moment, remember that they have been having a tough time lately and then let them know that you are here to collect their information for the customer proposal that is due this morning. You don’t yell or respond in a hostile manner. You speak to them in calm even tones. You come from a place of trying to put yourself in their shoes, remembering that they don’t want to be unhappy and neither do you.

Can’t We All Just Get Along?

No, we cannot all get along all of the time. It is unrealistic to think that all team members will absolutely agree with you or with each other all of the time. I f every time you are together, there is never any disagreement, look out – you have problems.

Diffuse Anger, Strengthen Relationships

What me, upset? OK not you, but let’s consider the fact that perhaps one day, someone close to you may become angry. Perhaps even in the workplace. And you already know that communications become clouded when anger does the talking. Try this recipe next time anger appears on the menu.
